Game Time! |

The 1st exhibition game of the season against Cal. St. Monterey Bay begins in a couple of hours (5 p.m. PST). Strange but there wasn't any preview article
from the Record today (sigh). I'll be in the Big West Chatroom if anyone else
listening to the game wants to chat.

There was an article in the paper today but for some reason they did not post in on the website. Basically it said that the starters would be Nuefville, Smith,
Ford, Nunally and Willard. Thomasson hopes that the team plays well so that he can get a look at the bench players as well. Willard was quoted as saying that
the team is ready to finally face an different opposition (other than themselves).
I will be a the game tonight so I will post on the players tonight. Go Tigers! |

Why isn't the game being broadcast on PacificTigers.com? Also, in the Record's article it says the game is being broadcast on KSTN and that there
would be a link on PacificTigers.com to KSTN, well guess what, there isn't. I am not happy about this!

Ok, just got back from the game. Well, it's hard to tell from this first game what this team is capable of. I saw some positives out there and some
negatives as well. I'll start with the positves.
Our big men look good. I like the starters of Ford, Nunally, and Willard for our frontline. Willard was solid. He is a hustler and plays with passion. He rebounded well and put points on the board. I think he'll be our leading scorer. It is really nice to see how well he has developed. Nunally does look improved from his first year. He can work both the left and right side of the paint. He had a couple nice dunks in the second half. Ford, looks about the same but he did take it to the basket a couple of times and played good D. Didn't get a chance to see that 12 foot shot he's been working on. Reserve bigs. Eveland was pretty good for his first game even though he went 1-6 from 3 point land. I think he'll improve there as the season progresses. Nyika was impressive. He has a slight build but he was scoring well in the paint and he has a really good free throw shot. I'm not sure how well he'll do against bigger and stronger teams though. Starting guards. Ok, Here's where I am concerned. I am not sure Nuefville can be an effective starter for us. He still doesn't have a 3 point shot and can't run the offense like a starter should. The shots that he took were way off. The only thing that he does somewhat well is penetrate occasionally. Smith doesn't look like a 3 point threat either. His arc is really high and he take a long time to release. He was way off on a couple shots as well. He is better driving to the basket and finishing than last year though. That was a positive for him however.....Where is our outside shooting going to come from? Tonight it looked pretty bad. I know this has been a concern of this team as we have discussed on this board. Reserve guards. Surprisingly the best looking 3 point shooter tonight was Reed Kamler. He has a nice looking shot but he is a defensive liability. He doesn't have the quickness to stay in front of his man. I can see him getting only limited minutes. Huddleston might be able to step into this role for us but he just needs some games under his belt. His shot looks pretty good, I think he just needs some confidence. Lamer, Young, and Sporty all look about the same running the point. I really like their quickness, it will be interesting to see who can develop the fastest. Sporty has really good court vision. He is a good passer too. I am not sure that we should redshirt him. I think the starting point guard spot is definitely still up for grabs. Well this was just the first game. Hopefully the shots will start falling as the team plays more games. Too bad this has to be the year where we don't have a solid experienced point guard. If we did I could easily see us at the top of the league because of our inside game. We'll just have to see who steps up. |

I still don't understand the decision to let Cody go. I thought all year that he would be our guy at the two spot. Kinda like a combo of Smith and Troyer.
Can shoot the 3 but also go to the basket to score and rebound. I know arguing this is moot at this point, but I was very disapointed when I heard that news. I
think that decision was a bad one and hurt us a lot at the guard spot. Like I said earlier, I hope somebody will step up.

T-smith's numbers are very solid for the game with 4-7 shooting 4 assists and best of all 0 TO's. I like him continuing to start at the 2 despite not
having a 3 pt shot.
Please oh please Tigers do not shoot 27 3 pointers a game this year. Clearly it's not going to be the strength of the team and there is no sense whatsoever trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. This team will have much more luck getting 3 points the old fashioned way than they will jacking it up from behind the arc. Really they need to keep the attempts to under 20 a night. |

This is what you want to see. 1) we beat up on someone we should beat up on (heck we proved we can score 90 pts...with everyone playing). 2) Everyone played,
and took a shot 3) We saw solid production from the bigs so we know that we are anchored 4) all the new kids got some time and exposure 5) Coach got to try
some looks "on"
We still won't know anything for sure until they face a DI opponent. Lavar N. sounds as billed i.e. a back up. Eveland sounds like a shooter (who was off). Coach doesn't let a guy take 6 shots, unless he has confidence they'll drop. Glad to hear Williams can create fouls and mis-matches...that's a rare skill. It's had to judge stats on a game like this because everyone is all nerves. Consider they shot 38% (horrible) in the first half and 52% in the second, people are going to have to "settle" a bit.

I agree Pacificness. I think two or three guys will emerge as 3 point shooters, but with that said unless things improve dramatically this team shouldn't
shoot a lot of 3's.
With that in mind, a question for those in attendance, last night did the team show any kind of mid-range game or is the offense still shots from 3' and in or shots from 19'9' and out? |

The Tiger teams in the past that have excelled have all been teams with a strong inside game, so the team did not have to rely on the 3 point shot. Granted the
teams in the past that I have mentioned all had a pretty good 3pt shooter. I actually like the fact that our inside play will be our strength. If someone steps
up as a good 3 point shooter this team could really do some damage this year.

I said awhile ago that I think Lavar Neufville is a serviceable PG at best. I don't know what the answer is, but if running Joe Ford at the point gives the
Tigers the best chance to win, then I'm all for it. I'd still like to see Neufville get 15-18 mins a night
spelling the starter, but I'm not convinced he's the guy.
On another note ... Attention Stockton Record and all other media outlets: Pacific's junior transfer big man is named Nyika Williams, not Nykia. He is not a cell phone. Thank you. |

I would like to see Demetrece Young and Sporty Carter redshirt. Both players would benefit learning the system from the point guard position. This would give
Young a chance to hone his shot and learn the one position and be a far more productive player with two years remaining. Carter would benefit from more time
to rehab the injury and possibly shed his knee brace, plus learn the point position as well, giving the program four years of solid point guard play. I agree
that Ford and T. Smith should continue as the starting guard combination, with Neuville as point back-up, and Huddleston and Lamar coming off the bench. I
think both of these guys are ready to compete now and will continue to improve as the season progresses. In my opinion, Huddleston and Lamar provide an
exciting dimension of getting better game by game. As for Carter, I would like to see him preserve his eligibilty and join Huddleston and Lamar as healthier
and stronger player in'10-'11.

Someone's going to get squeezed into redshirting, and it might as well be Carter. Sounds like a crowded backcourt and why waste a year seeing limited
minutes? I think the Chairman would probably like to see all the freshmen redshirt, but I'm all for at the very least having Huddleston play. He can help
now.

There is an argument here to "stagger" your guard development by not allowing someone in the back court (other than maybe Young...but I think we need
him) to Red Shirt this year. We'll lose Lavar and Joe and who knows about Nick/ Reed/ Richart. That leaves us with Huddleston, Sporty, Young. Smith and
Lamar. sooo:
You want to see what guard combos your are going to have to have and you want a tandem going forward and a tandem to challenge them, especially because (if history is any indication) coach T will bring in a JC guard either to replace smith/ young. Huddleston--you don't want to sit a kid coming off a season like he had. It's just bad mojo. So unless he struggles, he gets to develop Sporty--you have to see if he can be competitive and if the knee holds up now. You don't want to sit (2 back to back years) him this year and realize he can't keep up next year. Should he sit, probably...but also can't afford to do it unless you confident he's still going to progress. I think he plays this year and sits next year/ year after. That way guards are staggered. Simith--is needed. Period. He will be expected to be the senior leadership on this team next year. Lamar--Might be a great choice to sit, but if he's ahead in the point battle then you can't sit him. He's a natural choice to sit this year to line up with Sporty in 5 years. Young--has to play. He is being relied upon the be the "transitional" guard next year. Which means next year he and Smith become (hopefully) that dinamite guard combo we are used to on Coach T teams. He already knows the sytem and could probably be the one to run it really well next year because it probably won't be Smith. He's my pick to be running point by the end of this year. I think he was brought in to be either the man or to back the man up. All that said, if he struggles even a bit early, expect him to be sat so he can be the transitional guy in 2 years when Smith is gone. Give him a year and I think Reed will be a 12 min a game 3 point specialist. A little more confidence and he could be good. Let see if he develops.

Very good breakdown, Cheer. I mostly concur. I don't think anyone's even thinking Smith was even considering taking the camisa roja, so your assessment
is right on the money. Same with Young, unless Steph Lamar is just handing him his jock in practice. Otherwise, I'm all for D. Young playing this season
and next and Lamar taking a redshirt. I posted on the BW Board that I thought Steph Lamar was a good bet to develop over time into a very good (not great)
player in the system. So if that means redshirting, I'm all in.
Can't say I agree with your assessment on Sporty. I don't think taking another year off from game competition is a bad idea. Even a redshirt gets reps in practice every day, so your theory is a bit skewed. I realize it's not the same as game experience, but it could do him a world of good. We've all said that HS players have a tough time transitioning and picking up the system, so unless Sporty is some kind of 3-point wunderkind, I think he's gonna have a hard time cracking the rotation, thus a wasted year of riding pine. Neufville could be starting at the beginning of the season and be waving a towel by season's end. Essentially this year's Allen Purnell. But if he has improved, he'll be an important part of the rotation, even if it's off the bench. |

Good start to the season...will be interesting to see if Coach T gets it down to an 7 or 8 man rotation, or if he goes 10 deep like he has the past two
seasons. The 3 point shooting is a major concern because as we all know, the Big West is a guard oriented league and if we can't hang with the 3 point
shooting teams, we will definitely lose a couple of games. For example, a hot Cal Poly team beats us every once in a while. The years we dominated the
conference, our guard play was the key. Honestly, I am just happy I don't have to watch Anthony Brown anymore...sorry, it was a long career.

Oh, I meant to add that if Reed Kamler becomes a James Doran or Chad Troyer Lite, that'd be OK with me. If he's a liability on D, you can always hide
him a zone. If Kamler comes in and knocks down 3-4 treys a game, I'll take it.

Amen on AB GoPac
CC...regarding Sporty. I guess in the end it's going to depend upon his attitude and the knee when it comes time to decide. I have just (personally) never been a fan of someone taking two years off. It dulls the instincts and seems to slow most guys down. I like the idea of him getting out of the floor for 5 min and getting to get the feel again. He was originally described as fast and slashy. If he can't do that anymore doesn't he want to know..don't the coaches want to know? If he can and the knee is fine I say say see what he has. Your point is of course valid as well it's just that: For me, someone HAS to sit, this year or next or you have 3 gus all maturing at the same time. That's just poor planning and doesn't give any one of them to take ownership of the team. Coach will make the strategic choice. |
